Audition Requirements

Violin

  • 3 Octave scales in the following major keys: C, G and B-flat.  Scales are to be performed in even eighth notes using separate bows at a tempo of MM quarter note = 60. Strive for accurate intonation and steady tempo.
  • Fluency in 1st through 5th position and familiarity with the higher positions. Suzuki book 5 or above or equivalent. (Wohlfart, Kaiser etudes, etc.)
  • A 2 minute selection of the student’s choosing representative of his or her musical and technical ability.
  • Performance of the attached short excerpts. Style, character and musicianship will be as important as intonation, tempo and technique.

Viola

  • 3 Octave scales in the following major keys: C, F, E-flat. Scales are to be performed in even eighth notes using separate bows at a tempo of MM quarter note = 60. Strive for accurate intonation and steady tempo.
  • A 2 minute selection of the student’s choosing representative of his or her musical and technical ability.
  • Performance of the attached short excerpts. Style, character and musicianship will be as important as intonation, tempo and technique.

Cello

  • 3 Octave scales in the following major keys: E-flat, D and A. Scales are to be performed in even eighth notes using separate bows at a tempo of MM quarter note = 60. Strive for accurate intonation and steady tempo.
  • A 2 minute selection of the student’s choosing representative of his or her musical and technical ability.
  • Performance of the attached short excerpts. Style, character and musicianship will be as important as intonation, tempo and technique.

Double Bass

  • 2 Octave scales in the following major keys: C, F and G. Scales are to be performed in even eighth notes using separate bows at a tempo of MM quarter note = 60.  Strive for accurate intonation and steady tempo.
  • A 2 minute selection of the student’s choosing representative of his or her musical and technical ability.
  • Performance of the attached short excerpt. Please take time to study it. Style, character and musicianship will be as important as intonation, tempo and technique.

Winds

  • A short solo piece, or portion thereof, demonstrating the student’s musical and technical ability. FBA grade 4 minimum (grade 5 or 6 preferred), or you may play your All State audition music.
  • Major scales and arpeggios in the following keys on your instrument: C,F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, G,D,A, and E.

Percussion

  • A short prepared piece on one of the following: snare drum, tympani or mallet instrument, representative of the student’s musical and technical ability, or you may play your All State audition music.
  • Knowledge of basic rudiments, stick technique, etc.
  • Percussionists need to bring all necessary sticks and mallets to the audition. They will NOT be provided.
